Comelec, PNP, AFP, PCG to work together vs. threat groups amid 2022 elections

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) and law enforcement agencies on Monday agreed to have legal cooperation to prosecute threat groups in connection with the 2022 polls.

In a statement, the Philippine National Police said its organization, Comelec, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the Philippine Coast Guard signed  Joint Letter Directive (JLD) No. 01-2022 in Camp Crame.

The JLD aims to enhance coordination among the agencies in building up cases, investigation of crimes perpetrated by, and prosecution of leaders, members, and supporters of threat groups and their financiers.

It will also guide the identification and disposition of surrendered, recovered, and confiscated firearms following the chain of custody, according to the PNP.

AFP chief General Andres Centino said they have designated units to target armed groups.

"We look forward to having a secure election. We would like to ensure that the process will be safeguarded, and that's the best thing that the AFP, PNP, and PCG can give to our country," he said.

Comelec acting chairperson Commissioner Socorro Inting praised the efforts of the uniformed personnel to secure the elections.

"I am confident that, in the performance of your functions concerning the coming elections, our uniformed personnel shall always remain professional and non-partisan," she said.

"From the manning of COMELEC checkpoints and implementation of the gun ban, down to the determination of hotspots and dismantling of private armed groups, the responsibility of our uniformed personnel is a heavy one and thus deserves commendation," she added.

Among the signatories of the JLD were Inting, Centino, PNP chief Police General Dionardo Carlos, and PCG Deputy Commandant for Operations Eduardo Fabricante.—Joviland Rita/AOL, GMA News
