Jimenez on Ka Leody’s proclamation rally: ‘His actions were not ideal’

Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesperson James Jimenez on Thursday said labor leader and presidential aspirant Leody De Guzman's actions "were not ideal" after the latter pushed through with his proclamation rally despite lacking a permit for the event.

"Ka Leody’s actions were not ideal. The rules are there for a reason," Jimenez said.

"The rules are there to ensure the security of the rally-goers, as well as the campaigns themselves," he added.

Jimenez said he will reach out to De Guzman to discuss the matter and to secure his commitment that their rallies will be compliant with Comelec's rules in the future.

"Again, the rules are there for a purpose and they should be obeyed," he said.

Earlier in the day, the camp of De Guzman said they are ready to face the consequences for their February 8 proclamation rally.

Sonny Melencio, De Guzman's campaign manager, said they rushed to file a permit ahead of the rally, which had a last-minute change of venue.

Melencio said they had a permit approved by the Quezon City government to conduct the rally in Amoranto, which was their original plan. However, the “lapse” happened when they decided to transfer to the Bantayog ng mga Bayani.

Comelec director Elaiza David earlier said there was no record of a campaign application permit filed by de Guzman’s camp for his proclamation rally at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani.

De Guzman already acknowledged that his camp had lapses in the filing of permit prior to holding his proclamation rally in Quezon City.

He, however, stressed that they observed the health protocols for the gathering set by the Comelec due to COVID-19 and even said that the proclamation rally had a “good outcome.” — BM, GMA News
