Duterte lauds People Power freedom fighters

President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday lauded the participants of the 1986 People Power Revolution that toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos and those fighting for its legacy, saying these people paved the way for a better Philippines.

Duterte issued the statement to mark the 36th anniversary of the bloodless mass action that forced the dictator and his family to exile in the United States.

"As we honor the courage and solidarity of those who came before us and fought to uphold our democracy, let us also honor and thank those who continue to keep the legacy of this largely peaceful and non-violent revolution," Duterte said.

"This celebration serves as a strong reminder that with unity, cooperation and faith, there is nothing we can collectively achieve for the greater good of our country" he added.

Duterte's mother, Soling, was once one of the leaders of the groups that opposed the Marcos dictatorship.

"Let us emulate their heroism, selflessness and compassion as we strive to recover from present challenges and march forward to better Philippines for all," he said.

"Mabuhay ang lahing Pilipino," he added. — Llanesca T. Panti/RSJ, GMA News
