Pacquiao on 36th People Power anniv: Ipakulong natin ang corrupt

Presidential candidate Senator Manny Pacquiao on Friday reiterated his promise to put corrupt government officials behind bars as the country commemorates the 36th anniversary of the People Power Revolution.

In a statement, Pacquiao said that the 1986 EDSA Revolution overthrew dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. due to severe corruption.

“Kung ako ang papalarin na maging pangulo magkakaroon tayo ng 2022 Revolution Against Corruption! Para tuldukan ang kurapsyon sa Pilipinas. Nangyari ito sa Hongkong at Singapore. Sa tulong ng Diyos ay mangyayari rin ito sa Pilipinas. Ipakulong natin ang corrupt at wala 'yung pardon-pardon na yan,”  he said.

(If I am elected president, we will have a 2022 Revolution Against Corruption to end corruption in the Philippines. It happened in Hong Kong and Singapore. With the help of God, it will also happen in the Philippines. Let’s put the corrupt in prison without pardon.)

He lamented that 36 years after the revolution, corruption and poverty are still widespread because nothing changed in the government.

Pacquiao also suggested a lifetime imprisonment for corrupt government officials.

The reign of Marcos Sr., from 1965 to 1986, has become infamous for corruption and human rights abuses. The 1986 uprising ousted him and installed Corazon Aquino, widow of slain senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., as president.

The Presidential Commission on Good Government has already recovered more than P170 billion worth of the Marcos ill-gotten wealth and is in the process of running after P125 billion more in assets.
