MWSS ‘very concerned’ about Angat Dam water level

The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) on Thursday expressed concern about the current low water level at Angat Dam as it might impact water supply during the hot dry season months.

“I am very concerned about the water level at Angat and how it will affect the supply of water during the summer months,” MWSS chief regulator Patrick Ty said at a virtual press conference.

“We are still monitoring it, preparing contingency measures,” Ty said.

As of 6 a.m. on Thursday, PAGASA’s data showed the water level at Angat Dam was at 196.09 meters, which is 15.91 meters below its normal high water level of 212 meters.

Angat Dam supplies around 96% of Metro Manila’s water requirements.

Despite the gloomy water supply outlook for the dry season months, Ty said, “We don’t think this will be a water crisis similar to the 2019,” noting that deep-wells were reactivated, the Cardona Water Treatment Plant is up an running, and mobile water treatment plants can be mobilized to ensure that water supply will be available for 24 hours.

Concessionaires Maynilad and Manila Water earlier said they are preparing measures to mitigate the impact on customers of the low water level in Angat Dam.  — BM, GMA News
