Duterte names PMS Usec. Anderson Lo as Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao

President Rodrigo Duterte has named Presidential Management Staff (PMS) Undersecretary Anderson Ang Lo as the new Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao, Malacañang said on Wednesday.

"Yes," Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea  said via text message when asked to confirm Lo's appointment.

The Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao post is in charge of corruption cases against local government officials in the region.

"We wish Deputy Ombudsman Lo success as we assure him of the Executive’s support in the Office of the Ombudsman’s drive towards good governance in the public sector," Presidential Communications Secretary and acting presidential spokesperson Martin Andanar in a statement.

Lawyer Dante Vargas was appointed as Deputy Ombudsman for the Visayas while Assistant Ombudsman Jose Balmeo Jr. was promoted to Deputy Ombudsman for the Military and Other Law Enforcement Offices, according to the appointment papers released by the Supreme Court.

Lo is the husband of Judge Jill Rose Jaugan-Lo, the judge who administered Duterte's oath in 2013 when he was mayor of Davao City. He took his oath as PMS undersecretary in August 2016.

Lo was among the three nominees shortlisted by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) for the position of Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao. The others were Atty. Beda Epres and Atty. Maria Iluminada Lapid-Viva.

In August last year, Ombudsman Samuel Martires said he had full trust and confidence in the integrity and competencies of the three.

Martires said the three have undergone vetting process by himself through exhaustive background checks.  —KBK/VBL, GMA News
