Bongbong Marcos: Martial law only needed in war

The declaration of martial law is needed only if the country is in a state of war, presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said Wednesday.

At a Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum, Marcos was asked if he is inclined to declare a military rule.

Marcos’ father, late President Ferdinand Marcos issued Proclamation 1081 placing the entire Philippines under martial law in 1972.

“Martial law is necessary when there’s war so if we are not at war, and I hope we will not get into a war, then there’s no need to talk about martial law and resort to martial law,” Marcos said.

The Amnesty International documented an estimated 70,000 incarcerated individuals, 34,000 torture victims, and 3,240 Filipinos killed by state forces.

Meanwhile, Marcos said there would be no shutting down of the press if he wins in the presidential race.

He also said it is important to also listen to the press as they are “right” in some instances.

“You listen to them. Sometimes they are right,” Marcos said.—LDF, GMA News
