ASEAN members in talks for new plan vs. human trafficking —DILG
Member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are now discussing a new plan to improve its efforts against trafficking in persons (TIP), according to the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
DILG Undersecretary Bernardo Florece Jr. said ASEAN cross-sectoral delegates, during a recently concluded meeting in Pampanga, saw the value of the 2017-2020 Bohol TIP work plan for a streamlined, holistic, and inclusive regional approach.
“Given the complexities and nature of TIP as trans-border crime, it is a battle that no single country can fight alone on its own. But the power of the international community could, together, if it intends to,” he said.
Based on the review of the Bohol TIP work plan, Florece said ASEAN delegates pointed out accomplishments such as:
- increased levels of awareness among members of the public and in key communities of TIP
- increased reporting of suspected TIP cases to law enforcement officials
- more rapid provision of assistance and support services to TIP victims
- improved conduct of repatriation procedures for victims of TIP
Florece said human trafficking cases were also reduced and there were high conviction rates in prosecutions and the collaboration among international organizations, and other stakeholders improved.
According to him, the ASEAN will establish ACTIP (ASEAN Convention Against Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children) national representatives for anti-human trafficking efforts. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
