BFAR identifies 6 areas positive for toxic red tide

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has announced that, after collecting shellfish, several areas remain positive for Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) or toxic red tide.

In an advisory issued on the 14th of April and signed by BFAR National Director retired Commodore Eduardo B. Gongona, the affected areas are:

  • coastal waters of Milagros in Masbate
  • coastal waters of Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol
  • Dumaquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur
  • Litalit Bay, San Benito, in Surigao del Norte
  • Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur
  • coastal waters of Bolinao in Pangasinan

All types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered from the affected areas, BFAR said, are not safe for human consumption.

"Fish, squid, shrimps, and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking," BFAR advised. -- BAP, GMA News
