Next PNP chief known by Tuesday —Duterte

The next chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) will be known Tuesday, according to President Rodrigo Duterte.

During his regular Talk to the People on Monday night, Duterte said his choice of next PNP chief from the list given to him by Interior Secretary Eduardo Año "will be made public tomorrow (Tuesday)."

"I will review the recommendation, pati yung ano ang nagawa nila," Duterte said of the contenders, whom he did not name.  "The biodata ng mga contenders, the history of their previous na trabaho nila sa gobyerno."

Current PNP chief, Police General Dionardo Carlos, is set to retire on May 8 — a day before the national and local elections — upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 56.

Carlos was appointed PNP chief — the seventh under the Duterte administration — on November 12, 2021.

Año earlier said he recommended two senior police officials for acting PNP chief post to Duterte.

Citing Article 7 Section 15 of the Constitution, Año said the president can only order temporary appointments within 60 days before the national elections.  —KBK, GMA News
