Duterte OKs new teacher levels for more promotions, higher salaries

President Rodrigo Duterte has signed an executive order creating new position titles for school teachers -- a move welcomed by the Department of Education (DepEd).

According to DepEd, the creation of new teaching levels will expand the promotion and increase the salaries of teachers.

Duterte's Executive Order No. 174 creates new position titles Teacher IV, Teacher V, Teacher VI, Teacher VII, and Master Teacher V.

Signed on Thursday, the EO also promotes professional development and career advancement among public school teachers.

“The DepEd is jubilant about the timely issuance of Executive Order No. 174 titled Establishing the Expanded Career Progression System for Public School Teachers,” the DepEd said on Friday.

“We shall work with the Civil Service Commission, the Department of Budget and Management, and the Professional Regulation Commission in formulating the rules and regulations of the EO.”

Duterte's order will take effect "immediately after publication in the Official Gazette or in a newspaper of general circulation," it said.

In March, DepEd Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan said some educators are stuck at Teacher III level since the succeeding available position, Master Teacher I, demands high educational requirements.

Currently, Teacher I receives Salary Grade 11; Teacher II receives Salary Grade 12; and Teacher III receives Salary Grade 13. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
