28.7M students now enrolled for SY 2022-2023 as DepEd surpasses target

The number of enrolled learners for School Year 2022-2023 increased to 28.7 million on Tuesday, surpassing the Department of Education’s (DepEd) target of 28.6 million.

As of 7 a.m. on Tuesday, DepEd reported that the total number of enrolled students for the current academic year was 28,797,660.

Of this number, 24,668,233 were from the quick count of the Learner Information System, while 4,129,427 were from early registration data.

Calabarzon recorded the highest number of registrants so far with 3,944,335, followed by Central Luzon with 2,972,066, and the National Capital Region with 2,762,592.

The enrollment period began on July 25 and closed on August 22 or the first day of classes.

Late enrollees, however, will still be accepted based on DepEd Order (DO) 3, s. 2018 or the Basic Education Enrollment Policy.

Under this policy, a school may accept late enrollees provided that the student will be able to meet 80% of the prescribed number of school days for each school year, and the quarterly requirement to pass the grade level as governed by the latest existing applicable DepEd issuances.

“If the learner cannot meet the required number of school days and the quarterly requirement, the school head may exercise his/her discretion to accept the enrollee and implement catch-up activities or interventions under acceptable circumstances,” the DO read.

DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa urged parents to take advantage of the late registration scheme.

“Hinikayat natin ang ating mga magulang na i-enroll na ‘yung mga hindi nakakapag-enroll na anak para maihanda natin [nang tuluy-tuloy] ang ating mga paaralan base sa actual number of learners this year," he said in a statement.

(We encourage our parents to enroll their children who have not yet enrolled so that we can continuously prepare our schools based on the actual number of learners this year.)

Anyone who wishes to enroll in the Alternative Learning System (ALS) may do so via digital and/or physical platforms set up by schools and community learning centers within their barangays, the DepEd said. —VBL, GMA News
