DTI: Refined sugar at P70 per kilo now in supermarkets

Some supermarkets have started selling refined white sugar for P70 per kilo, but purchase is limited to one kilo per customer.

According to Mariz Umali's report on "24 Oras,"  the Department of Trade and Industry inspected several supermarkets in Metro Manila to check if establishment owners are heeding the president's call to lower the price of the commodity.

The home brand refined sugar costs P70, while the premium raw brown sugar is priced at P77 pesos per kilo.

Supermarkets said that the supply of white sugar is still sufficient. Still, each customer can buy only one kilo of the cheaper sugar.

"'Pag hinoard ng isang tao lahat ng P70 pesos na asukal, mawawalan ng supply 'yung para sa iba," Trade Undersecretary Ruth Castelo said.

"Hopefully nga hanggang December maging available 'yung P70 per kilo na sugar natin or lower kung pwede pang ibaba," she added.

DTI will also wait for the Department of Agriculture's release of the Suggested Retail Price to monitor sugar products in the markets.—Sherylin Untalan/LDF, GMA News
