MMDA mulls adjustments in motorcycle lanes

With the increasing number of motorcycles, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said Wednesday it is studying the adjustments it will make to motorcycle lanes.

“'Yun pong motorcycle lanes pinag-aaralan po ng ating traffic engineering center kung saan po ilalagay dahil ang kadalasan pong nagiging problema d'yan ay 'yung sa mga splits kung saan po merong service roads at merong flyover o di kaya underpass so doon po nabubulunan 'yung mga motorcycles,” MMDA spokesperson Crisanto Saruca Jr. said.

(Our traffic engineering center is studying where we can place motorcycle lanes because the most common problems are in the split roads where there are service roads, flyovers, or underpasses. That's where the chokepoints happen.)

He said the traffic engineering center will give a recommendation on motorcycle lanes after the study.

Saruca their latest traffic survey results showed that the number of motorcycles increased.

In January 2021, the MMDA said it is considering designating the rightmost lane of EDSA for motorcycles.

The second lane from the left on EDSA was previously designated as motorcycle lane. However, after the leftmost lane became the EDSA Busway in 2020, motorcycles now would weave in and out of the remaining lanes.

Based on a 2018 MMDA regulation, non-exclusive motorcycle lanes were established in different thoroughfares such as EDSA, Commonwealth, C5, among others.—AOL, GMA News
