PSA: Over 72 million Filipinos now registered for national ID

More than 72 million Filipinos had registered for the national ID as of August 26, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said on Tuesday.

In a statement, PSA said that 72,348,546 Filipinos have completed their Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) Step 2 Registration, which involves capturing biometric information, such as fingerprints, iris, and front-facing photographs.

The PSA said the total makes up 78.6% of the 92 million registration target for 2022.

The state statistics bureau aims to distribute 30 million physical cards and 20 million digital IDs by the end of the year.

"The digital ID has the same functionality and validity as the physical PhilID cards," said Fred Sollesta of the PhilSys Registry Office. "Expected to be rolled out this year, this will allow Filipinos to enjoy the benefits of being registered to PhilSys while waiting for their physical cards." — VBL, GMA News
