Complaint filed vs. Remulla's son over P1.3-M marijuana —PDEA

A complaint has been filed against the son of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla over the alleged importation of illegal drugs, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) said Friday.

PDEA spokesperson Derrick Carreon told GMA News Online that the complaint against Juanito Jose Remulla III is for importation of dangerous drugs under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and for failure to exhibit or deposit documents under the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.

Under Article III Section 4 of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, life imprisonment and a fine from P500,000 to P10 million shall be imposed upon any person involved in importation of illegal drugs.

The complaint against Juanito was filed before the Office of the City Prosecutor-Las Piñas City on Thursday, the PDEA said.

Carreon said the possibility of bail will depend on the prosecutor and discretion of the court. He, however, noted that the prosecutor does not usually recommend bail for importation of dangerous drugs.

“Bail is a matter of recommendation ng Prosecution and discretion ng Court. Usually po kapag Section 4 (Importation of Dangerous Drugs) the Prosecutor may not recommend bail,” he said.

Juanito, Remulla's eldest son, was nabbed in connection with the shipment containing supposed illegal drugs intercepted at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

On October 11, the PDEA and  NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group conducted an operation, a controlled delivery, at BF Resort Village in Talon Dos, Las Piñas City.

Authorities seized from the operation one parcel containing 937 grams of dried leaves of suspected kush or high-grade marijuana "with a current street value of P1,311,800."

In a statement on Thursday, Justice Secretary Remulla said he would "not intervene in his son's predicament."

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., meanwhile, said calls for Remulla's resignation have no basis. —KBK, GMA News
