Marcos says gov't closely monitoring Neneng

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Friday ensured that the government is ready for the possible effects of Tropical Depression Neneng, especially in the northern part of Luzon.

Marcos said Neneng has to be closely monitored as weather disturbances entering the country could swiftly "develop."

He recalled that early this month, Karding was first categorized as super typhoon, placing several areas in Luzon under Signal No. 5 and leaving a trail of destruction in the provinces of Nueva Ecija, Bulacan, Tarlac, Pampanga and Zambales.

"[Neneng] looks a little stronger than the previous one at doon mas northern ang kanyang track, so nakabantay kami ng mabuti," Marcos said in an interview with reporters, referring to Tropical Depression Maymay.

"But once again, I think the key to all of this is watch it very closely because may bagong feature ang mga bagyo ngayon."

(Nenenglooks a little stronger than the previous one and it is tracking the northern direction so we are closely monitoring. The key to all of this is watch it very closely because typhoons have a new feature now.)

Meanwhile, Marcos said the assets and relief goods needed are already prepositioned in areas which could be hit by Neneng.

"They estimate now that 10,000 people will be affected by this Neneng. So, those are the kind of numbers that we are preparing for," Marcos said.

In its 11 a.m. report on Friday, state weather bureau PAGASA said Neneng may bring light to heavy rains to areas in North Luzon on Saturday.

PAGASA also said Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No.1 may be raised on Friday afternoon over the eastern portion of Northern Luzon in anticipation of winds brought by Neneng.

TCWS Signal No. 2, meanwhile, is "most likely" the highest wind signal that will be raised, the weather bureau said. —KBK, GMA News
