Metro Manila traffic free of congestion - MMDA

MANILA, Philippines - The traffic situation in Metro Manila was described as "abnormal" since Thursday morning as the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reported that all major thoroughfares in the metropolis were "green and go." According to MMDA general manager Robert Nacianceno, most of the major roads in Metro Manila were free of traffic congestion apart from some minor slowdowns near bus terminals and churches. "Just as expected... traffic will be smooth in the entire region because most of the residents are out of town or relaxing at their homes," Nacianceno said in an interview. He added that they expect a more faster traffic flow on Good Friday, but at the same time, warning motorists to be careful and observe the right speed to avoid accidents. Nacianceno said the number of passengers at bus terminals has also gone down as compared to last Wednesday's rush. "Now that traffic management is not a priority, we will take advantage of the four day holiday and start our road repair and sidewalk improvement operations," he said. The MMDA's improvement project of major roads started in 2004 which includes seven major roads: EDSA, C5, Road 10, Quezon Avenue, Marcos Highway, MacArthur Highway and Commonwealth Avenue. Included in the project are sidewalk clearing, improvement of traffic flow, landscaping, police security, flood control management and cleanliness. The operation also involves concrete re-blocking of damaged portions of the highways, pavement markings, painting and lighting of tunnels and installation of additional footbridges and loading platforms. "This is a continuous project being under taken by the agency to provide motorists and pedestrians a safe and well-maintained roads and sidewalks," Nacianceno said. - GMANews.TV
