Makabayan bloc seeks inquiry into Davao model Yvonette Plaza's death

A congressional inquiry is being sought into the death of Davao City-based businesswoman and model Yvonne Chua Plaza.

Members of the Makabayan bloc made the call under House Resolution 729 asking the House Committee on Women and Gender Equality to conduct an investigation.

Plaza, 38, was shot to death outside her rented house in Barangay Sto. Nino, Tugbok district in Davao City last December 29, 2022.

Murder, obstruction of justice, and theft complaints have been filed against the 10 suspects in the killing, including Brigadier General Jesus Durante III, 1001st Infantry Brigade commander.

“Durante and the other army officers involved must immediately be held accountable for their crimes. The case of Plaza adds up to the numerous cases of violence against women perpetrated by men in uniform,” the resolution read.

“It also proves that the culture of violence continues to thrive inside the Armed Forces of the Philippines,” it added.

Durante served as the head of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) to former President Rodrigo Duterte.

The Police Regional Office in Davao formed a Special Investigation Task Group to probe the killing of Plaza.

“Public officials, especially men in uniform, who use their power to inflict violence against women continue to enjoy freedom while there is no justice being given to their victims,” the Makabayan said.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines has earlier announced separate court martial proceedings to determine Durante's administrative liabilities.

Durante has already been relieved of his post as commander and has been placed under the custody of the Army Headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. —LDF/KG, GMA Integrated News
