VP Sara wants LGBTQ+ relationships protected under law

Vice President Sara Duterte on Tuesday said she would support legislation that would protect the partnership between members of the LGBTQ+ community.

In a message to GMA News Online, Duterte, however, clarified that she was not particularly pertaining to same-sex marriage, saying she wants the protection of such partnerships under the law.

“Yes I support legislation to protect other gender partnerships under the law,” she said.

Duterte, who has repeatedly identified herself as a member of the LGBT community, also disclosed that she already discussed such proposed LGBTQ+ protection with Senator Robin Padilla.

Earlier in the day, the Vice President witnessed 64 couples tie the knot in a free wedding ceremony sponsored by the Parañaque City local government.

During her speech, she pointed out that society now recognizes a lot of genders, thus she hopes their relationships will also be given legal protection.

“Marami pong gender ngayon na kinikilala ang ating society. Naisip ko, sana sa mga susunod na taon, ‘yung ibang gender, katulad ng mga LGBTQI, ay mabigyan din sila ng proteksyon ng batas sa kani-kanilang lang mga partners at sa kanilang mga relationship,” Duterte said.

(There are many genders recognized in our society today. Hopefully in the next few years, other genders, such as LGBTQI, will also be given the protection of the law when it comes to their partners and in their relationships.)

“Ako po…madaming kaibigan na LGBTQ. Gusto ko po na meron din silang proteksyon katulad nating mga kinakasal,” she added.

(I have a lot of LGBTQ friends. I want them to have the same protection as those of us who get married.)

Duterte earlier admitted she had “cycles” when she wanted to look masculine, saying this was the reason why she cut her hair short at times.

On the other hand, Sara said she would just put on makeup when she wanted to be feminine. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
