Police identify 5 suspects in alleged hazing death of University of Cebu student

The Cebu City police identified five fraternity officials who were suspects in last December's alleged hazing death of University of Cebu student Ronnel Baguio.

The local police added that they found two witnesses in the course of their investigation, including the fraternity member who supposedly recruited Baguio.

The suspects will face cases of murder and violation of the anti-hazing law.

The Public Attorney’s Office said Baguio was allegedly hazed on December 10, 2022, and rushed to the hospital on December 18, 2022.

Based on his death certificate, Baguio’s died from Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Secondary to Indirect Lung Injury, Acute Kidney Injury secondary to Rhabdmyolosis, and Acute Kidney Injury secondary to Rhabdomyolosis.

“‘Yung gumawa nito nag-eenjoy sila nung Pasko at New Year samantalang kami, magluluksa pa ako habang buhay,” the victim’s mother Leny Baguio said in a report on GMA’s “24 Oras Weekend” on Sunday.

“Kaya po sana makonsensya po kayo at maawa po kayo sa akin, maawa kayo sa amin at lalong maawa po kayo sa anak ko,” she added.

(Those who did this enjoyed themselves during Christmas and New Year while we, I will have to mourn for the rest of my life. This is why I hope they feel guilty and take pity on me, take pity on us, and more so, take pity on my child.) — Jon Viktor Cabuenas/DVM, GMA Integrated News
