House bill seeks longer validity of motor vehicle’s registration

Cagayan de Oro City 1st district Representative Lordan Suan has filed a bill seeking to extend the validity of a motor vehicle’s registration.

House Bill 8438 or the Extended Motor Vehicle Registration Act provides that the certificate of registration for brand new motor vehicles shall be valid for five years while the certificate of registration for brand new motorcycles shall be valid for three years.

For motor vehicles that are five to seven years old, the validity will be for three years while for those that are eight to nine years old, the validity shall be for two years.

Only motor vehicles that are 10 years old and older are required to renew their registration every year.

For motorcycles, those that are three to seven years old shall renew their certificates of registration every two years while those that are eight years old and above shall renew every year.

“By extending motor vehicle registration, this bill will help motor vehicle owners and drivers save registration renewal fees in the long run. They will also be able to avoid late fees as they won’t miss the deadline for renewal,” Suan said.

“We should give precedence to this bill as motor vehicle owners and drivers, both public and private, play a significant role in our economy and community. Their work is invaluable. We must appreciate and support them to ensure that they can continue to provide this essential service,” he added.

The bill is pending before the House Committee on Transportation. — Tina Panganiban-Perez/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
