Philippines logs 521 new COVID-19 cases, active tally at 53-day low


The Philippines reported 521 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, June 25, but the country’s active cases declined to the lowest level in 53 days, according to GMA Integrated News Research.

Data released by the Department of Health (DOH) revealed that the new infections brought the country’s total caseload to 4,162,752. Recoveries increased by 630 to 4,088,026, while the death toll was unchanged at 66,482.

The number of active cases decreased by 109 to 8,244 from 8,353 on Saturday, June 24. This is the second straight day of decline, and the lowest in 53 days since 7,565 active cases reported on May 3.

There were 5,056 samples collected from 4,907 individuals on June 24, based on data submitted b y 385 testing labs. The cumulative positivity rate was recorded at 13.5%.

The National Capital Region recorded the highest number of cases in the past two weeks with 1,740, followed by Central Luzon with 1,211, Calabarzon with 1,115, Western Visayas with 709, and the Ilocos Region with 543.

In terms of provinces and cities, Quezon City accounted for 439 cases, Iloilo with 401, Cavite with 370, Bulacan with 311, and Pampanga with 294.

In terms of facilities, the DOH said 4,475 out of the 25,135 beds were occupied, translating to a bed occupancy rate of 17.8% as of June 22, 2023.

The latest data available from the DOH show that there were 179.046 million doses of COVID-19 administered as of March 19, 2023: 75.703 million first doses, 79.164 million complete doses, and 24.178 million booster doses. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News
