DepEd: New K-10 curriculum to be launched in a few weeks

The Department of Education (DepEd) said Tuesday that it is set to launch the revised curriculum for Kinder to Grade 10 (K to 10) in a few weeks.

At a palace briefing, DepEd spokesperson Undersecretary Michael Poa said that the implementation of the “decongested” K to 10 curriculum will be in School Year 2024-2025.

“Sa K to 10 review, since tapos na tayo do’n, ang feedback ng experts natin ay highly congested kasi ‘yung current K to 10 natin. Ibig sabihin, napakaraming kailangan matutunan ng learners na learning competencies within a school year. Napakarami ring kailangan ituro ng mga guro within a school year, which makes mastery of these subjects very difficult,” he explained.

(Since we’ve finished the K to 10 review, the feedback from our experts is that the current K to 10 curriculum is highly congested. This means that learners need to learn a lot within a school year. Teachers also have to teach a lot within a school year, which makes mastery of these subjects very difficult.)

To improve the quality of basic education in the country, Poa said the new curriculum would focus more on subjects like math, science, english, reading, and values formation.

DepEd opened the draft K to 10 curriculum for public review in April, wherein experts, members of the academe, and other education stakeholders were encouraged to give feedback on the shaping papers and revised curriculum guides.

“That’s why it took us time, we had to consider all the comments for the final tweaks. Now we’re done, we will be launching it in a few weeks time,” Poa added.

As for the K to 12 curriculum, he said that the review is still ongoing.

DepEd in May organized a national task force that would review the implementation of the senior high school program.

“Ang promise ng K to 12 is that magiging employable ‘yung mga learners, pero we have to admit na hindi ‘yan nangyayari sa ngayon [the promise of K to 12 is that the learners will be employable, but we have to admit that that is not happening right now]. We are looking at ways to align that industry demands, to boost employability, attractiveness of our learners to be employed,” Poa said.

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte earlier said that the K to 12 curriculum will be revised in a bid to produce more “competent, job-ready, active, and responsible” graduates. —Giselle Ombay/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
