Egay, Habagat damage to schools at P810 million —DepEd

It would take at least P810 million to reconstruct and rehabilitate the schools damaged by the effects of Typhoon Egay and the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, according to the Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday.

The DepEd’s situational report as of July 28 says that 169 schools in nine regions—National Capital Region (NCR), Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, and Eastern Visayas—sustained damage from the storm and flooding.

DepEd said 68 schools in CAR, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and Western Visayas were also being used as evacuation centers as of July 25.

There were 50,987 people or 13,828 families staying inside 737 evacuation centers, while 262,008 people or 63,086 families were staying in other places, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Monday.

The reported death toll due to Typhoon Egay and the Habagat has also climbed to 25, while 20 people remain missing, NDRRMC added. — BM, GMA Integrated News
