PNP: 1,690 cops suspended, demoted, or dismissed since July 2022

In just the past year, 583 police officers have been dismissed, 129 demoted, and 978 suspended due to various violations and cases, according to the Philippine National Police.

In Jun Veneracion's report on "24 Oras" on Thursday,  these figures are for the period from July 1, 2022, to August 2, 2023.

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benhur Abalos said he would meet with PNP chief Benjamin Acorda Jr. to review police operational procedures.

He also expressed concern about the death of a 17-year-old boy in Navotas City, shot dead by the police who allegedly mistook him for a suspect.

“[I’m] very concerned, very concerned, kaya importante dapat tanggalin dito agad at kasuhan ang dapat kasuhan,” said Abalos.

Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption also urged Acorda to be firm in ensuring accountability for police officers who have broken the law.

“Kay chief PNP, kamay na bakal, and 'yung certainty, kasiguruhan ng arrest, kasuhan, dismissal,” said VACC president Boy Evangelista.

"We are cleansing the Philippine National Police, kasi kokonti lang yang sila, kailangang maubos sila," said National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Police Brigadier General Jose Nartatez Jr. — Sherylin Untalan/BM, GMA Integrated News
