DepEd warns teachers vs. car loan scam

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday warned the public against an alleged car loan scam targeting public school teachers.

In a statement, the DepEd said at least 29 teachers who fell victim to the  Labas/Casa/Assume Balance/ Loan Accommodation scheme have filed cases against those reportedly behind the fraudulent activity. The scam reportedly started in Pampanga.

An investigation showed the perpetrators allegedly enticed teachers with financial woes to apply for a car loan in exchange for a certain amount of cash, including the downpayment for the unit, and a promise of passive income in a transport network vehicle service as incentives if the loan is approved.

However, the perpetrators allegedly abandon their victims once the mortgaged cars are turned over to them.

The DepEd said it is coordinating with authorities to arrest those behind the scam. It will likewise conduct debriefing, counseling, and psychological first aid to the victims.

“We remind outreaching and non-teaching personnel and the public as well, to remain vigilant against financial scams,” it said.

Other victims or those who were victimized by similar schemes may report it to the DepEd Public Assistance and Action Center through their e-mail: depedactioncenter@deped.gov.ph or hotlines: 863-1663 and 863-1943.—LDF, GMA Integrated News
