US Embassy condemns killing of radioman Jumalon
The United States Embassy on Tuesday condemned the murder of journalist Juan “Johnny Walker” Jumalon.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of Juan Jumalon during this time of grief. Journalism is fundamental to a free society, and attacks on journalists put that freedom at risk,” said the embassy in a statement.
The embassy also welcomed the efforts taken by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Benjamin Abalos, and local law enforcement to solve the crime.
Jumalon was killed by an unidentified gunman during a live radio broadcast at his residence in Calamba, Misamis Occidental on Sunday.
According to initial information from the Philippine National Police, the suspect intended to have an important announcement broadcasted on air, but suddenly drew a gun and shot the anchor through the head.
Jumalon was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. — DVM/KG, GMA Integrated News
