Mindanao State University gym bombing a 'cowardly act' - BARMM

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) on Sunday described the bombing of the Mindanao State University (MSU) gymnasium in Marawi City as “atrocious and cowardly”, calling on the government for “swift justice” on its perpetrators. 

In a statement on Sunday, BARMM chief Minister Ahod B. Ebrahim said the BARMM “is saddened and troubled by the devastating news of the explosion that occurred today at the Mindanao State University Gym in Marawi City. Initial reports show that the tragic incident has resulted in the loss of precious lives. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims, and my thoughts are with those injured in the senseless act of violence.”

Four people were killed and scores were wounded after an explosion at the Dimaporo Gymnasium in the school on Sunday morning.

Ebrahim said the BARMM condemns “in the strongest terms these atrocious and cowardly acts.”

“We stand firm and united against any form of violence and extremism that threatens the peace and harmony of our society. Such acts not only take away innocent lives but also sow fear and discord among our people,” he added.

Ebrahim said the MSU is “an academic institution that has always welcomed people of different faiths and we must see to it that this tradition will endure these times of tribulations.”

The BARMM head urged authorities “to conduct a thorough investigation to swiftly bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice.”

He assured that the Bangsamoro Government is “fully committed to supporting and cooperating with the investigative agencies to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their wicked actions.”

"In this moment of grief and shock, let us come together as a community, embracing one another with compassion and solidarity. It is through unity and collective resolve that we will overcome such challenges and continue to strive for peaceful and cohesive Bangsamoro," the BARMM said.

Ebrahim urged the populace to “to remain vigilant and report to proper authorities any suspicious activities or personalities in your areas.”

“Let us stand together in upholding peace and promoting understanding among all communities in our region. Let us reject violence and all forms of extremism and work tirelessly towards a future where safety, justice, and tolerance prevail,” the BARMM head said.—RF, GMA Integrated News
