MIAA boosts security measures after P11.4M alleged shabu seized in NAIA

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) is reinforcing security measures at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) after the seizure of P11.4 million worth of alleged shabu in an out-of-service kitchen area in the airport.

In a statement Monday, MIAA General Manager Jose Eric Ines said he has ordered a full K9 sweep and the cordoning off of the area following the incident.

"This incident, while concerning, highlights the vigilance and effectiveness of our security measures," said Ines.

“We remain on full alert, with the ultimate goal of ensuring a drug-free workplace. These discoveries, although significant, are part of an ongoing investigation that reflects our unwavering dedication to the safety and security of all individuals within the airport premises,” he added.

Construction workers found three large packets of alleged shabu in a grease trap as they were tearing down the kitchen of an old restaurant at the NAIA Terminal 1, according to Jonathan Andal's 24 Oras Weekend report on Sunday.

The packet had been in the grease trap for so long that it had discolored.

Ines said he had met with the MIAA Security Block and is set to meet with law enforcement agencies including the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the National Bureau of Investigation to enhance coordination and intelligence sharing and prevent similar incidents in the future.

He also said the MIAA continues to enhance its security protocols in response to these incidents, aiming for a secure, safe, and drug-free airport environment.—Sundy Locus/AOL, GMA Integrated News
