DepEd condemns killing of 14-year-old in Cebu answering her modules at home

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Saturday issued a statement "strongly condemning" the killing of a 14-year-old girl who was shot dead while answering her learning modules at home in Talisay City, Cebu.

The agency said that students should not fear for their safety as they pursue their education, whether at home or in school.

“The Department is deeply concerned and alarmed with the recent incidents of brutal killings of minors, especially girls. We urge the local authorities and the community to come together in solidarity against violence and to ensure the safety of all learners,” it said.

The victim was answering her learning modules in Barangay Cansojong when a masked intruder forced his way into their home, according to a report by GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak's Fe Marie Dumaboc.

“DepEd extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and classmates of the victim during this time of grief,” it added.

The DepEd called on authorities for a swift and thorough investigation of the incident and bring the perpetrator to justice.

The victim’s mother said that she didn’t know of any arguments nor was she aware if her daughter had enemies.

Talisay Police were investigating a person of interest in the killing and looking into the involvement of the minor’s relatives in illegal drugs.

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III also urged authorities to double their efforts in probing the girl's death.

“We condemn this heinous act in the strongest possible terms and call upon the authorities to expedite their investigation to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice,” Pimentel said in a statement on Saturday.

The senator also extended his deepest condolences and offered prayers for the victim's family. — Jamil Santos/ VAL/VDV, GMA Integrated News
