PCG: Aghon strands 6,833 travelers, drivers, cargo helpers
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Saturday reported that, as of noon, over 6,833 passengers, truck drivers, and cargo helpers in the Bicol, Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, Southern Tagalog, and Northeastern Mindanao Regions were stranded due to Tropical Depression Aghon.
In a statement, the PCG said its command center also reported that 1,492 rolling cargo, 48 vessels, and 30 motor-bancas were stranded in the said regions.
Further, 92 vessels and 20 motor-bancas were taking shelter due to the tropical cyclone.
PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gavan directed all concerned PCG district commanders to ensure zero maritime casualties amid the tropical depression.
Meanwhile, PCG Spokesperson Rear Admiral Armando Balilo said that Coast Guard deployable response groups (DRGs) and rescue assets in the Visayas and Mindanao were “all set” to assist local governments in evacuation and rescue operations.
"CG Admiral Gavan also instructed PCG units to coordinate with other rescue agencies and to observe the fastest response time in responding to maritime incidents," Balilo said.
The PCG urged sea passengers to remain vigilant and local fishermen not to conduct fishing operations.
Mariners were also urged to observe maritime safety. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
