Luzon Grid under yellow alert on Monday afternoon, evening —NGCP
The Luzon Grid will be placed under yellow alert on Monday afternoon and evening due to forced outage and derated capacity of some plants, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.
In an advisory, the NGCP said the yellow alert would be implemented from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. as well as from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
This comes as some 2,692.8 megawatts were unavailable to the grid, as two plants have been on forced outage since 2023, two between January and March 2024, and 12 between April and May, while six were running on derated capacities.
A yellow alert indicates that the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
Among the factors that contributed to the yellow alert is the deration of Masinloc 1, Masinloc 2, Calaca 2, and Ilijan A; the unavailability of Angat Main, and the forced outage of QPPL, Pagbilao 2, and Sual 1.
The Visayas and Mindanao grids, meanwhile, are under normal condition.
For its part, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) said it has already asked participants of the interruptible load program to prepare for possible de-loading should the situation escalate to a red alert.
“We also urge the public to keep on practicing energy efficiency to help manage the demand… We will continue to monitor the situation and provide necessary updates if needed,” Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga said in a separate advisory. — Joviland Rita and Jon VIktor D.
