Marcos considering to extend PNP chief Marbil's term

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Monday said he is considering to extend the term of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Rommel Marbil amid the election season.

In an ambush interview, Marcos said the matter is being studied, noting that the argument of extending Marbil is strong.

“Well, there is a very strong argument that it would be, it would not be good for stability especially to change the chief PNP in the middle of a campaign period and approaching an election period,” Marcos said.

“So pinag-aaralan namin, but I think that is probably a very strong argument to keep him on. At the very least, until after the elections,” he added.

Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said there are “indications” that Marbil could remain in his post until June as he said that replacing him would be “ineffective” after the agency’s reshuffles.

Marbil was named the country’s top cop in April 2024.
