No work, classes at Adamson, 'Alternative Learning Day' at UP on EDSA People Power anniversary
Adamson University has declared February 25, 2025, a special non-working school holiday to mark the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
In a statement on Wednesday, the university administration said that the declaration intends to “keep EDSA's memory alive and enhanced among our future generations,” in line with the Vincentian values of justice and freedom.
“We spend this day joining mobilizations and reflection sessions, as we continue to fight against corruption and political dynasties, violence, and impunity that plague our present government and society,” Adamson said.
Adamson made the declaration after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared the anniversary a special working holiday under Proclamation No. 727.
“This sinister strategy of sidelining history and downplaying the gains of freedom in the EDSA People Power revolution is not acceptable to us. It is tantamount to discrediting and diminishing the sacrifices of thousands who died during Martial Law, of millions who placed their lives on the line in EDSA in their struggle for freedom,” the statement read.
Several schools had earlier announced class suspensions in connection with the EDSA People Power anniversary, including the Immaculate Conception Academy, Saint Pedro Poveda College, Xavier School, De La Salle Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, St. Scholastica’s Academy in Pampanga, University of the Philippines Cebu, and Congregatio Immaculati Cordis Mariae-Philippines Schools Network.
Meanwhile, UP president Angelo Jimenez issued an administrative order declaring February 25 an Alternative Learning Day.
''All administrators, faculty, REPS (Research, Extension and Professional Staff), students, and staff across the UP System are encouraged to participate in meaningful and peaceful activities that honor the spirit of People Power, with appropriate learning and work arrangements in place,'' UP said in a statement.
''The administrative order reaffirms the university’s commitment to upholding democratic values, human rights, unity, and civil liberties.''
Jimenez's order came after the sectoral regents asked for a declaration of a non-working and alternative learning day, according to a report by the Philippine Collegian, UP Diliman's official student publication. — VBL/BAP, GMA Integrated News
