PNP, AFP to uphold national security amid Duterte arrest
Police and military forces announced on Tuesday their commitment to maintaining peace and order following the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte for crimes against humanity.
“The PNP remains committed to assisting in lawful processes while maintaining peace and order. In fulfilling this role, the organization upholds its duty to enforce the law with professionalism and adherence to due process,” the Philippine National Police (PNP) said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, the PNP assisted the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime in implementing a notice from the International Criminal Police Organization against Duterte upon his arrival from Hong Kong.
The PNP stated that 379 police officers had been deployed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and other key locations.
Duterte’s arrest was linked to the International Criminal Court’s investigation into the bloody anti-illegal drugs campaign during his administration, which claimed thousands of lives, including those of teenagers.
While government records state that around 6,000 individuals were killed in the drug war, human rights organizations estimate the number could be as high as 30,000.
The former chief executive was immediately brought to Villamor Airbase in Pasay City.
The PNP also urged the public to avoid spreading false information about the situation.
“The PNP urges the public to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation. Furthermore, the PNP strongly cautions against the spread of fake news and advises the public to rely only on official government sources for accurate information,” the statement added.
For its part, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) affirmed its readiness to support national security efforts following Duterte’s arrest.
“As a professional organization, the AFP adheres to the chain of command, and we remain focused on our mandate,” said AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla.
“However, together with the appropriate government agencies, we stand ready to reinforce efforts to uphold national security and stability when necessary.” — DVM, GMA Integrated News
