CAAP advises pilots to avoid flying near Kanlaon Volcano after eruption

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) on Tuesday issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for flights near Kanlaon Volcano following its explosive eruption.

In an advisory, CAAP said the NOTAM will be in effect from 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday until 5:51 a.m. on Wednesday.

“The CAAP has issued a NOTAM for flights near Mt. Kanlaon, with vertical limits from the surface up to 22,000 feet,” the agency said.

“Flight operators are advised to avoid flying near the volcano due to the potential hazards posed by volcanic ash,” it added.

Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island had an explosive eruption at 5:51 a.m. on Tuesday, the PHIVOLCS said. The eruption ended at 6:47 a.m.

Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano, which means there is a high level of volcanic unrest. Magmatic intrusion to shallow levels of the edifice is driving unrest, with indications that a hazardous eruption could occur in weeks.

Possible hazards from the volcano include sudden explosive eruption, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density current (PDC), rockfall, and lahars during heavy rains.—Joviland Rita/AOL, GMA Integrated News
