6 arrested after botched ambush on BJMP vehicle in ParaƱaque

Authorities arrested six men after they ambushed a vehicle transporting a Chinese national deprived of liberty (PDL) in Parañaque City.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said it was transporting 37-year-old PDL Hu Yang to its facility in Barangay La Huerta after a court hearing in Makati when they were ambushed on Monday.

On board two vehicles, the suspects blocked and opened fire at the BJMP vehicle along the service road beside Cavitex at 12:20 p.m.

Jail officers, with the help of Parañaque police, returned fire and hit one of the suspects' vehicles. The black MPV hit a tree at the Las Piñas–Parañaque Wetland Park while a black sedan tried to flee.

The suspects on board the MPV then fled on foot into the mangrove forest in the wetland park.

A BJMP jail officer sustained a gunshot wound on his left shoulder. He was rushed to a hospital while the PDL was returned to the jail facility.

The suspects, four of whom are Filipinos and two are Chinese, were nabbed in a hot pursuit operation.

Authorities also recovered from a suspects a replica grenade, several US dollar bills, a .357 Magnum revolver containing live ammunition, and one fired cartridge case from the suspects.

Suspected illegal drugs and drug-related paraphernalia were also confiscated.

The BJMP and Philippine National Police are conducting investigation to determine whether the attack was an ambush or an attempt to rescue the PDL.—Mariel Celine Serquiña/AOL/RF, GMA Integrated News
