DOH warns vs. road accidents, heat-related, foodborne illnesses during Holy Week
The Department of Health (DOH) has warned the public against road accidents, heat-related and foodborne illnesses during the Holy Week.
During Holy Week last year, or from March 24 to 31, 2024, the DOH said it recorded 631 cases of road traffic-related injuries.
Most of the cases involved motorists who were not wearing safety gear such as helmets and seatbelts, and suffered bruises, body fractures and head injuries.

The agency also reminded the public to ensure their vehicles and their well-being are in good condition prior to traveling.
The DOH advised to check the BLOW-BAG-SET, or Battery, Lights, Oil, Water, Brakes, Air, Gas, Self, Engine, Tires. It also reminded the public not to drink alcohol, get enough sleep before driving, observe patience and avoid arguing with other motorists or road rage.
Heat-related illness
Citing PAGASA, the DOH said the heat may reach "extreme caution" category, or 33 to 41 degrees Celsius in the next four days.
"Mapanganib ang mataas na heat index dahil maaaring magdulot ito ng heat-related illnesses gaya ng heat stroke," it warned.
(A high heat index is dangerous as it can cause heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke.)
The public is advised to bring food and drink plenty of water. They should also wear or use heat protection such as hats, umbrellas, and cool and light-colored clothes.
In case of dizziness or fainting from excessive heat, the public is advised to go to the shade or a cool place, drink water, and put a wet towel on the forehead, neck or nape, armpits, and groin.
Foodborne illness
The DOH also recorded 122 cases of foodborne illness during Holy Week 2024 as food spoils quickly during the hot weather.
In case of symptoms such as excessive diarrhea, stomach pain or vomiting, the DOH advised going to the nearest ER.
Amid the raising of the Code White Alert in the country from April 13 to April 20, 2025, the DOH said it is on stand-by, with assistance from the Health Emergency Management Bureau Operation Centers and DOH Hospitals to respond to health emergencies and concerns.
Code White is declared during national events or holidays such as Holy Week which can cause widespread incidents or emergencies especially when a lot of people travel and gather at tourist attractions and churches," said Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa.
