Nearly 18K passers

In a media briefing, UP President Angelo Jimenez said a total of 17,996 applicants passed this year's UPCAT, translating to 13% of the 135,236 examinees.

Jimenez said the number of passers this year was 6.74% higher than last year, with most of them (32.9%) receiving admission notices for the Diliman campus.

Fifty-five percent of the passers also reportedly came from public schools—both science and non-science high schools—while the remaining 45% were from private schools.

With regard to the geographic location, 30% came from high schools in Metro Manila. Calabarzon had 19%, while Central Luzon had 11%.

Jimenez also pointed out that 21.5% of the qualifiers were from households with P200,000 or below gross annual income.

The number of first-generation college students also doubled from 6.6% last year to 13% this year.

"We all know what first-generation college students are—they are the first in their families from four generations to step into college. And so today you can say that inch by inch, one family at a time, we are starting more and more people on a journey to break the cycle of poverty and underprivilegedness that have circumscribed their families and lives for generations," the UP president explained.

"This is very special to us. We want to give the underprivileged a fighting chance to be able to participate in the opportunities of our society," he added.

Jimenez also stressed that with the release of the results of UPCAT—a requirement for admission in the country's national university—doors have been opened, leading to opportunities, nation building, and lifelong journey of learning and service.

"To the successful examinees… congratulations to all of you! Your hard work, your dreams, and your potential have brought you to this very moment," he said.

"To those who did not make it this time, know that this is not the end of course, but a beginning of many other paths you can take toward your goals. UP is just one way to serve the country and to promote your dreams, and there are many, many other ways [to succeed]. Many people have achieved magnificent success outside UP," he continued.

According to UP, non-qualifiers may view in the portal their University Predicted Grade (UPG), which serves as the basis for evaluating all UPCAT applicants.

The UPG is computed using both the applicant’s high school academic performance and their UPCAT scores.

"This information may be used by applicants to appeal for admission to certain UP campuses, depending on the availability of slots and the appeal guidelines of each campus," the university said.
