Suspected election-related incidents climb from 31 to 82 after Election Day — PNP
The number of suspected election-related incidents (ERIs) jumped from 31 to 82 after the conduct of the May 2025 midterm polls on Monday, according to data collected by the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday.
In an update, the PNP said the number of validated ERIs since the election period on January 12 remained at 46.
The PNP has yet to provide information on the updated number of fatalities and injured persons in these incidents as of posting time.
In the previous polls, the PNP recorded 27 validated ERIs in the 2022 national and local elections. The record increased to 105 in the 2023 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls.
On Election Day of Eleksyon 2025, the PNP monitored a total of 27 incidents including explosions, a strafing, an ambush, robberies, shootings, maulings and armed encounters.
These also include delays of automated counting machines, taking pictures of ballots, flying voters, interference of ACMs, gun law violations, and illegal campaigns.
Two persons in Basilan were killed in Tabuan-Lasa in a firefight between two groups on Election Day, according to the police on Tuesday.
In Lanao del Sur, one person was shot dead when he was about to return to his home after casting his vote at the polling center.
While in Abra, three people were hurt in two separate mauling incidents Tineg and Pigidan.
In Maguindanao del Sur, one person was injured after an explosion near the barangay hall of Dado in Datu Piang. Two other explosions were reported in Datu Anggal Midtimbang in the same province and Calanogas, Lanao del Sur.
Meanwhile in Sulu, an unidentified person destroyed an ACM at a voting center in Tapul.
Considering most of the incidents were reported in BARMM, PNP public information office chief Police Colonel Randulf Tuaño said the police will be studying the security of the region in preparation for the parliamentary elections in October.
“Nakikita po natin sa mga insidente na nangyari sa kanila, ang tanong po natin dyan is ito ba ay karapat-dapat na tawaging ‘isolated’ incidents,” Tuaño said.
(After observing the incidents that occurred in these areas, our question is whether these are appropriate to be called ‘isolated’ incidents.)
“Tinitignan natin yung tamang words na gamitin sa PRO BAR na meron silang distinct o unique na politics na kung saan ito ay maaaring gamitin, yung mga datos na natala nila ngayon para sa mga darating na elections lalo na sa parliamentary elections sa October,” he added.
(We are looking at the right words to use in Police Regional Office Bangsamoro Autonomous Region as they have a distinct or unique politics where the data they recorded can be used for the upcoming elections, especially the parliamentary elections in October,” he added. —RF, GMA Integrated News
