PH military rejects China coast guard claims of 'supervised' mission
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) rejected China's assertions that a recent resupply mission to the Ayungin Shoal requires China's permission or supervision.
In a statement on Friday, the AFP reiterated that BRP Sierra Madre’s resupply missions at Ayungin Shoal were “lawful, routine, and conducted within [the Philippines’] exclusive economic zone in accordance with international law.”
“We do not, and will never, seek permission from any foreign state to conduct operations that assert and protect our sovereign rights,” the statement said.
The statement came days after the China Coast Guard (CCG) claimed it allowed and supervised the resupply mission conducted on May 16.
“With the permission of the Chinese side, the Philippines sent a civilian vessel to deliver daily supplies to its illegally grounded warship at China's Ren'ai Jiao in the South China Sea on May 16. The CCG conducted inquiries, verification and full supervision of the Philippine vessel throughout the operation,” read an article posted by China's Ministry of National Defense.
AFP rejected China’s statements and said that it was misleading the international community and projecting control.
“The facts remain unchanged: Ayungin Shoal lies within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. We have every right to be there and to conduct our routine activities in accordance with international and domestic laws,” AFP said.
They assured that they would continue to uphold the country’s sovereign rights, and urged the public to remain vigilant against disinformation that “threatens regional peace and stability.”
China currently claims ownership over almost all of the South China Sea, including areas claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.
While a ruling Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague sided with the Philippines and stated China’s claims over the South China Sea had “no legal basis” in 2016, China has not recognized said decision. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
