PH population rose to 112.7M in 2024 – Marcos

The population of the Philippines has increased by more than three million in the last four years, according to the 2024 census data released by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Marcos’ Proclamation 973 stated that there were 112,729,484 Filipinos as of July 1, 2024, up 3.69 million from 109,035,343 persons as of May 1, 2020, based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

Batas Pambansa 72 provides that the final population count shall be considered official for all purposes upon proclamation by the President.

Marcos issued the proclamation on July 11.

The 2024 Census and Population and Community-Based Monitoring System were conducted from July to September 2024, with July 1 as the reference date.

''The Philippine population figure reflects the total number of persons living in the 18 administrative regions of the country as of 12:01 a.m. on July 1, 2024. It also includes Filipinos in Philippine embassies, consulates, and missions abroad,'' the PSA said in a statement.

Slowing down

According to the PSA, the population growth rate slowed to 0.80% annually from 2020 to 2024. From 2015 to 2020, the population growth rate was higher at 1.63%.

''The slowdown in the growth rate may be driven by several interrelated factors such as but not limited to declining fertility and birth rate, elevated mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic, and subdued migration activity,'' the PSA said.

Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) was the only region to post an increase in its annual population growth rate (3.43%) while Region V (Bicol) recorded a decline (-0.07%).

Of the 18 regions, Region IV-A (CALABARZON) had the largest population in 2024 with 16.93 million, followed by the National Capital Region with 14 million, and Region III (Central Luzon) with 12.99 million.

Six other regions posted population above five million in 2024.

The least populated region is the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) with 1.81 million. — with Mariel Celine Serquina/VBL/BAP, GMA Integrated News
