DILG reminds LGUs to implement safety measures amid Typhoon Nando

Local government units have been asked to implement preemptive or mandatory evacuation of residents in danger zones ahead of Typhoon Nando's possible landfall in extreme northern Luzon.

In a statement, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) also emphasized the need for a no-sail policy and a liquor ban for public safety.

It also said evacuation centers must be adequately prepared, powered, and stocked.

“The DILG said all concerned officials must take all necessary critical actions without delay to minimize risk and protect lives and livelihoods. The DILG calls on the public to remain alert, cooperate with authorities, and follow official instructions in their respective areas,” the statement read.

As of 5 p.m. Saturday, Signal No. 1 has been hoisted over 14 areas in Luzon as Nando continues to move northwestward.

Nando is expected to pass close to or make landfall over Batanes or the Babuyan Islands by Monday afternoon or evening, before exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Tuesday morning.

In a separate statement, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said Basco Airport personnel have begun the installation of typhoon shutters across critical areas of the terminal and other vulnerable infrastructure.

"These measures aim to secure all essential airport areas, particularly glass panels, doors, and windows," CAAP said.

CAAP Director General retired Lt. Gen. Raul Del Rosario has also directed all CAAP-operated airports, especially those in Nando's projected path, "to activate their preparedness protocols without delay." —VBL, GMA Integrated News
