Damage, disruption reported after Cebu earthquake


Heavy damage was reported in the Cebu towns of Daanbantayan, Medellin, and San Remigio, and Bogo City after the Magnitude 6.9 earthquake that hit late Tuesday night.

One of those hardest hit was the Archdiocesan Shrine of Santa Rosa de Lima in Daanbantayan, a church more than a hundred years old anda heritage landmark, according to GMA Regional TV.

The town of San Remigio reported "widespread damage and disruption to the lives of our constituents" and declared a state of calamity.

"This advisory aims to facilitate immediate response and relief efforts, including the mobilization of resources, provision of assistance to affected communities, and implementation of measures to prevent further harm," read the advisory signed by Mayor Mariano Martinez and Vice Mayor Alphonsine Corominas-Gonzales.

Medellin town reported one fatality and "many injured" being taken care of by the Medellin Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. 

On its Facebook page, it reported the collapse of a water tank in Poblacion and the Dagunsungan and Bangon bridges as not passable.

The port of Medellin was also reportedly partially damaged, with cracks seen.

The jail in the town suffered damage but all 404 persons deprived of liberty have been accounted for.

In Cebu City, patients at the Cebu City Medical Center were evacuated from the hospital after the earthquake hit.

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival the move was to keep the patients safe in case of aftershocks.

In Bogo City, a portion of a fastfood  restaurant gave way because of the earthquake.

Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro said the authorities are still verifying any one was hurt in the incident.

Scores also evacuated office buildings at the Cebu Business Park due to the earthquake.

The Miss Asia Pacific International beauty pageant was also disrupted with the contestants and guests running for safety.
