Palace says PH needs change of attitude, heart not constitutional amendment

Malacañang said Tuesday that what the country needs is a change of attitude among government officials and not amending the Constitution.

This was in response to House Minority Leader and 4Ps party-list Rep. Marcelino Libanan floating the idea of changing the Constitution following the call of Senator Alan Peter Cayetano for a snap election.

According to Castro, President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr., at this time, is not in favor of constitutional change.

''Ang Pangulo po ay hindi po sa ngayon sumasang-ayon para sa isang constitutional change. Marami pong paraan para po maresolba ang ganitong klaseng korapsyon, marami na pong batas na maaaring gamitin kung susunod lamang ang mga public officials natin,'' Castro said.

(The President, at this time, is not in favor of constitutional change. There's a lot of measures to address corruption, there's a lot of laws that can be used, only if our public officials follow them.)

''Hindi po siguro nararapat sa ngayon ang constitutional change, ang kailangan ay change of attitude ng mga officers at change of heart, maging maka-Pilipino, maging makabayan,'' she added.

(Constitutional change is not proper at this moment, what is needed is change of attitude and change of heart. Be pro-Filipino, pro-nation.)

Libanan earlier argued that in amending the Charter “genuine electoral reforms” could be introduced.

Earlier, the Commission on Elections said it cannot hold snap elections without a law allowing it. Comelec chair George Erwin Garcia said there is no provision for snap elections under the country’s laws and the 1987 Constitution.
