Senate adjourns session with no leadership change

The Senate on Friday adjourned session in time for the Undas break with no changes in leadership amid rumors of such.

During the plenary session in the morning, Senate Deputy Majority Leader JV Ejercito moved to adjourn the session until 3 p.m. of November 10, 2025.

Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III approved the motion after no senator objected.

Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano on Wednesday denied that there was a resolution being circulated seeking to replace Sotto as Senate President.

Just last month, Sotto replaced Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero as head of the upper chamber after the position was declared vacant in the plenary, with no senator opposing the move.

The majority bloc is currently composed of 15 members, while the Cayetano-led minority bloc has nine members, which includes the so-called Duterte bloc. The latter only needs the support of at least four more senators for a possible shakeup.

Prior to the adjournment on Friday, the Senate also gave a consent to the House of Representatives to extend its session until Monday, October 13, in order to approve the proposed 2026 national budget.

Ejercito said that the Senate received House Resolution 320, seeking approval to grant the extension of the House’s plenary session to October 13, for the purpose of considering the General Appropriations Bill (GAB) for fiscal year 2026 on third and final reading. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News
