The US Embassy in the Philippines has issued a natural disaster alert to American citizens in the country following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Davao Oriental on Friday morning.
The embassy said that its Customer Service Center in Davao is currently offline. But its American Citizens Services section in Manila and Consular Agency in Cebu remain operational.
“The Office of Civil Defense and Philippine government disaster management agencies are conducting assessments and deploying first responders. The Embassy continues to monitor the situation in conjunction with Philippine authorities,” the embassy said.
Further, American citizens living in tsunami warning areas are strongly advised to immediately evacuate or move farther inland. The tsunami warning was lifted at 1:43 p.m., Friday.
“Follow instructions from local officials, which may include closing beaches, evacuating low-lying areas, harbors and marinas, or moving ships to deeper water if safe to do so,” the embassy said. “Exercise extreme caution if you live within the affected areas.”
“Stay calm and alert. During periods of seismic activity, watch out for falling objects and stay away from glass windows, shelves, cabinets, and other heavy objects that may cause injury.”
US citizens in the Philippines are also highly advised to monitor the news and updates from PHIVOLCS.
