Marcos congratulates Japan’s new PM Sanae Takaichi

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Wednesday congratulated Japan's first woman Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi as he expressed intention to work with the new leader in elevating ties between Manila and Tokyo.

''Congratulations to Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae on her historic election as Japan’s first female Prime Minister. Her assumption demonstrates Japan’s firm democratic advocacy, and reflects the country’s commitment to progress and representation,'' Marcos said in a statement.

''I look forward to working with her in commemorating the 70th Anniversary of [Philippines-Japan] diplomatic ties in 2026, and in deepening the [Philippines-Japan] Strengthened Strategic Partnership for the peace and prosperity of our peoples,'' he added.

An acolyte of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and an admirer of Britain's Margaret Thatcher, Takaichi received 237 votes in the lower house election, topping the majority of the 465-seat chamber.

Reports noted that her victory marks a pivotal moment for the country where men still hold overwhelming sway.

Japan's new prime minister has previously been a vocal critic of China and its military build-up in the Asia-Pacific region.

Reports also said she has also been supportive of Taiwan, saying during a visit in April that it was "crucial" to strengthen security cooperation between Taipei and Tokyo. — BM, GMA Integrated News
