Marcos: PH to uphold rule of law, peaceful conflict resolution if elected to UN Security Council

The Philippines will continue to uphold the rule of law and the peaceful resolution of disputes in maintaining international peace and security if it elected to a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council for 2027-2028, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on Monday.

Marcos made the remarks at the 15th ASEAN-UN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, one of the related summits of the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit.

The Philippines is eyeing a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, representing the Asia-Pacific Group. The last time that the Philippines served on the council was for the 2004-2005 term.

“As a trusted partner, pathfinder, and committed peacemaker, the Philippines thanks our ASEAN colleagues for their steadfast endorsement of our bid for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council for 2027–2028,” the President said.

“If elected, the Philippines will continue to uphold the primacy of the rule of law and the peaceful settlement of disputes in the maintenance of international peace and security,” he added.

Earlier this month, Croatia expressed its support for the Philippines’ bid for a non-permanent seat on the council.

During the UN General Assembly in September, the Philippine delegation led by Foreign Affairs Ma. Theresa Lazaro pushed anew for the Philippines’ non-permanent membership to the UNSC.

In his intervention during the ASEAN-UN Summit, Marcos underscored that the true measure of the ASEAN partnership is not just in words but “in the progress we secure for our peoples,” which will “help transform sustainable development from a shared aspiration into a lived reality for all people.”

“As we chart the course ahead, ASEAN and the United Nations must rally behind a development agenda that leaves no one behind and upholds dignity for all,” the President said.

“This will require not only enhanced coordination across ASEAN and UN bodies, but also bold and innovative approaches, from digital public infrastructure to the ethical application of artificial intelligence and green technologies,” he added. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
